Projector technology is consistently improving. There are more projectors with brighter outputs, higher resolutions, and they even cost less than they did just a couple years ago. Additional strides have also been made; including longer lamp life and maintenance free designs. Advancements like the 'hybrid filter' from Hitachi mean less projector maintenance, a big plus in permanent installations and for users who just plain forget to clean the filter.

But what is the Hitachi hybrid filter? Essentially it works like other projector filters do. It prevents dust and debris from entering the inner workings of the projector. Keeping the optics free of dust and helping to keep the projector from overheating by allowing the free flow of circulating cool air. But what's different about the Hitachi hybrid filter is it's design. Using two filters in one container, it acts more like a HEPA filter by reducing the particles that can pass through it. The two filter layers first capture large dust particles (an accordion type design), and secondly trap the much smaller ones.

The advantage of the design is that users do not have do the usual scheduled filter cleaning maintenance. Just change the filter when/if the lamp is changed. Hitachi replacement lamps should also be sent with any lamp sent. This is very useful in permanent installations, since it can be difficult to get up to the projector.
