Even though I know there are 'better' projectors out there, it's really hard for me to give this any kind of negative review.
My wife and I were both looking at the new 70" flat screen tvs and debating on whether we wanted to shell out a thousand bucks to upgrade from our 50" tv we got a few years back, when a friend of mine recommended we look at getting a projector instead.
I was a bit hesitant, but I decided to give it a go since there was a 30 day guarantee and the sales person assured me they would take it back if I was unsatisfied. Setup was dead simple - plug it in, slide in a DVD (or hook it up to my xbox or cable box via HDMI) and start watching.
I'm amazed at how good this looks, especially when I'm watching the game on the high def channels on my cable box. WOW. I still need to get a screen (I'm just watching it on the wall now, but it still looks great), but I'm soooo glad I didn't go with the 70" tv. There is really no comparison.
Note: while the sound is perfectly acceptable (it does get pretty loud), if you want to hook it up to your sound system, the only external audio output is via digital audio cable. Just an fyi.

Works well. too bad they took out the the ability to raise and lower the picture with the lens. My son has the same model and his has that feature. On a ceiling mount I have to prop the rear of the projector up about 2 inches.

Comments about Epson MovieMate 85HD:
I want a back yard that has it all. We have fireplace, firepit, playground, pizza oven ...etc....we play this off our roll down sunshade and it is sooooo cool!!! Keeps the kids entertained when we have a party and it is the one thing that both the parents and kids talk about for weeks later! Kirk was a big help getting us what we needed and what I could handle doing myself. For a great price we have a movie theater wherever we like....doesn't get any better!

This right out of the box looked great on a wall.. viewed it on my 8ft wide screen, Nice! Not as good as the Panasonic but, nice.. Plans are to have this in my camper for the summer, definately do some backyard movies. I don't like the fact you can't lens shift, but for the price, it does great. Just have to be more precise on the positioning... All in all, best bang for the buck..

Comments about Epson MovieMate 85HD:
Out of the box, ez set up. Took the 85HD to work and everyone was amazed at the picture quality, viewed it on a wall making the picture about 7 ft tall and 16 foot wide, still with room lights on, beautiful picture, this one is to replace my Sanyo Z2, bulb died, Epson has a better picture... Awaiting a 12 ft wide blow up screen for camping and backyard watching of movies with the family. Well done Epson...
Comments about Epson MovieMate 85HD:
I have not had this projector long, so I cannot comment on bulb life. Yet, taking it out of the box, setting it up in my bedroom and popping a DVD in it - WOW! It is the closest I have been to having a movie theatre in my home, in my bedroom. The picture is vivid and large and makes watching anything better. I plan to carry this around too and use its portability as well. It size will make that easy as well as its handle. It is capable of doing more than I have done with it so far but I am glad to contribute my extremely positive first impression.

Very satisfied with quality and performance to date.
Comments about Epson MovieMate 85HD:
THIS IS MY SECOND EPSON MOVIE MATE! WHEN THE PROJECTOR ARRIVED I JUST PLUGGED IT IN, POPPED THE DVD IN AND PLAYED! THIS IS A MUST FOR ANY FAMILY WITH THE VERSATILITY OF GOING ANYWHERE! I PURCHASED A LARGE CANVAS FROM A CRAFT STORE AND NOW WE WATCH MOVIES IN OUR OUTDOOR GAZEBO! I USE THIS FOR HALLOWEEN TOO WITH SCARY HUGE IMAGES PEOPLE SEE OUT THE WINDOW! KUDOS TO EPSON AS ALWAYS!
Comments about Epson MovieMate 85HD:
We do outside movies for the family and this projector works great. I like the fact that if I want to quickly do a show I can just put the movie right into the projector or if I want a big movie theater setup I can add my dvd or blueray plater along with a surround sound system. I recommend it and think it's great.
Comments about Epson MovieMate 85HD:
Pros: Color excellent Portability Picture size (huge) Ease of use Cons: Movie is displayed as a Trapezoid Has a flaw out of the box ( The picture is not squared) The bottom of the projected image is perfectly level; however the top of the picture is not. The left margin of the movie is shorter than the right and therefore the top margin rises and is mildly distracting. We have figured out a way to compensate by tilting machine. Upon inspection of the device, the lens appears to "sit" low. We have watched only one movie, I have yet to call for service on it. Its a great machine otherwise and hopefully Epson will address my concern properly

16'-18.6' would optimal distance for a 12' wide screenA:
The Epson MovieMate 85HD is compatible with Apple iPod, Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360. However, this unit offers a VGA and HDMI input. If your generation Ipad has either of these outputs, this unit should work the same as any Mac or PC.Q:
Does this unit have lens flexibility on positioning? How direct must it be placed for correct viewing?1 answer
A:
Hi Steve, the Epson MM85 has restrictions on install ( this is a portable unit). No lens shift and a 1.32-1.58 throw range. Unlike it's big brothers the HC8350 and HD8700 that have all these features + some. Exam; for an 8' wide screen the throw is 10.5' - 12.5' from the screen and center to the screen.Q:
Has anyone at ProjectorPeople tried playing video from an iPhone on the MovieMate 85HD using an HDMI connector via Apple's digital video out adapter.
