Sony VPL-HW45ES 2D/ 3D Home Cinema Projector

projector central highly rated projectorprojector central highly rated projectorThe HW40ES is out and the next-generation of home entertainment is in! Expand your horizons beyond the TV screen - and create a spectacular cinematic experience in your own home, with the Sony VPL-HW45ES. The value-packed VPL-HW45ES Home Cinema projector lets you enjoy your favourite entertainment at its best in 2D or 3D.

Made for movie lovers, it's packed with technology developed for our professional Digital Cinema projectors, including SXRD panels and our own Advanced Reality Creation upscaling technology (used in existing Sony 4k projectors) for fabulously detailed Full HD images. Generous 1,800 lumens brightness ensures that films and TV shows look clear and sharp, even in living room environments with ambient light.

Same size as the HW40 but just as easy to set up, the VPL-HW45ES make the perfect addition to any home theater, media room or living room, with whisper-quiet fan noise that won't take you out of the action and a smart, front-facing exhaust port for extra installation flexibility. The projector's long-lasting lamp is rated for a remarkable 6,000 hours operation, resulting in less down-time and reduced maintenance costs.

Upgraded Reality Creation Engine for Sharper Images

Developed for our leading 4K Home Cinema projector range, our next generation Reality Creation reproduces colours and textures that are lost when movies are packaged to disc. It gives you crisper, sharper Full HD pictures, much closer to the 1080p original, for even better upscaling.

Comments about Sony VPL-HW45ES:

Very easy to install and set up. The picture (replacing an older 1080i Marantz) is remarkable, and the remote control is simple to use and intuitive.

Comments about Sony VPL-HW45ES:

Upgraded from the Panasonic PT-AE900U, this projector is amazing out of the box. Quite a bit heavier than the Panny however. We typically use this for movies and gaming. Movies look great on standard TV mode and set it to gaming mode for gaming and the picture is unbelievable and no input lag at all (We play Battlefield 1, Overwatch and COD). No further adjustments needed. Picture is extremely bright even with the lights on and curtains drawn. I've also watched a few videos and movies in 3D, I really like it, it's not so much in your face but more about depth which is nice. 3D typically makes my wife nauseous but not on this projector, she really enjoyed Rogue One in 3D. I have this on a 100" screen and the projector is ceiling mounted. My only complaints are there is no keystone control which is surprising but I made it work just fine and also the filter is under the chief mount so I have to remove the mount to clean the filter which is quite annoying. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this projector, glad I upgraded and glad I went with this projector thanks to the recommendation from Projector People.

Comments about Sony VPL-HW45ES:

I research purchases for months before buying. After coming here, Sarah helped me out over just 2-days & I ended up with the Sony HW45ES & I couldn't be happier. I chose the Sony over an Epson 5040UB, Optoma GT1080, BenQ HT2150ST & a JVC model I have since forgotten.

Here are a few of the factors I looked at:

Good for Home Theater
Good for Sports
Good for Gaming (was a must) on my Xbox One S (low input lag)
Good contrast
Good reviews
Zoom range & Lens shifting - I wanted to make minor adjustments easily
Ecomode as an option
Low audible noise
3D
4K/Faux 4K

It hit all of my musts except 4K. And that was never a huge must as there isn't much out there running in true 4K.

My setup:

I have a finished 16x15ft man-cave, but it's an odd shape (image provided). So I was limited to mounting a screen on a 97" wide wall due to the size of my theater seats. To give you an idea, a 92" wide fix framed screen will give you a 100" diagonal picture, & that was my goal. So it will just fit & I'll get an audio-transparent screen as my front speakers are in-wall Polk 265RTs.

Here is my review:

Pros:
First off, Sarah Fonk & others were extremely helpful. Top notch service.
Easy to install on a Peerless universal mount.
I was just floored by the HD image quality, brightness, & clarity.
And no online game-lag in Game mode!
Easy adjustments: Right away I noticed the picture was out of balance. So I removed the Sony, leveled the mount, & then put the Sony back on. I then used the Pattern button on the remote & had it perfect in a few mns.

***I have not tested 3D

Cons:

No ARC on the Sony. That was a huge surprise as it is a 2016 model. Why would they omit this feature???

Noise: Even at 22dBs (this is the quietest projector I could find), you can still hear the fan. Having never owned a projector, this was new to me. I have since moved the unit forward 15 inches (couldn't get it closer), turned on Ecomode, & am a happy camper!

Comments about Sony VPL-HW45ES:

This is my fifth projector over the past 12 years and was purchased to replace an LG cf181d, which I loved. I've had LED (Hated it!), DLP (Much better), and LCOS (That's the one), but despite the excellent specs on this unit, I was very reluctant to purchase any Sony product due to my past experiences with poor reliability, build quality and customer support. That said, and as a consumer biased against Sony, this is the most amazing projector I've ever seen, in home or show room. The unit is a "Light cannon", looks and feels solidly built, produces excellent colors including very good flesh tones, has shockingly good "Black levels," was a breeze to install and setup, makes hardly a whisper from the cooling fan, and needed minimal picture adjustments to optimize the picture. Even in the "low power" mode the picture is bright and colorful in a room with excess ambient light; in a dark room the picture is nothing less than vibrant. Whether from an X-Box 360, DirecTV, or my Oppo Blu-Ray player, I noted very little, if any, difficulty with fast moving images. In summary, this projector is miles ahead, in every way, of any others I have owned or seen (Even my beloved CF181) selling for less than $4000. One may get more "bells and whistles" in the next price range, but better picture? . . . I'd be very surprised.

    Comments about Sony VPL-HW45ES:

Being my first projector purchase I was a little apprehensive with image brightness and picture quality compared to the HDTVs I've owned in the past. After some research I settled on the Sony VPL-HW45ES and we couldn't be happier. The projector is ceiling mounted and paired with a 106" fixed frame screen in our basement. We have a suspended ceiling with a height of 85" and a throw of about 15'. The picture is fantastic. The colors are bright and vibrant and the image is sharp and crisp. Initial setup and adjustments were a bit of a pain. Even though our projector is directly in front of the screen it did take some time to properly align the image on the screen. This isn't a knock on the 45ES but rather my inexperience with the process coupled with the suspended ceiling mount we used. The only time we notice we're using a projector is the short warm up time on start-up and when every light is on. Even still, the picture is very good. Highly recommended!
